Watch Sona Jobarteh performe some West African music on her invitation by the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and the UNESCO Chair of Transcultural Music Studies (TMS). The Transcultural Music Studies invites on a regular basis musicology students as well as artist to various musical cultures concert. This program is aimed at inspiring students and artist alike and foster cultural exchange.

Sona Jobarteh is basically the first female Kora virtuoso to come from the Western African region of the Griot family. The Kora is one of the most prestigious and vital instruments belonging to the Manding peoples of West Africa particularly from Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. It belongs exclusively to the Griot families, and usually only men who are born into these families have the right to take up the instrument professionally. Sona Jobarteh combines various genres of African Music and western musical elements to perform here.
